ABSTRACT IMPORTANCE OF THE SURFACE ROUGHNESS IN THE INTERFERENCE FIT OF THE FRICTION BASED SHAFT HOLE MATES Alpan SEVÜK Advisor: Prof. Dr. Hikmet RENDE M.Sc. in Mechanical Engineering May 2005, 82 Pages The interference fit of the friction based shaft-hole mates are mostly used in transmitting power in automotive and pump manufacturing industry. In this study surface roughness effects and importance on the interference fits of the friction based shaft-hole mates are studied. The specimens prepared for the experiments are chosen in two different tolerances and fits are made by means of metals heat expansion instead of using press force for both assembly and disassembly. As a conclusion of this study surface roughness of the assembled and disassembled couples are measured in both interference and shrink fits. And the loss of surface roughness calculated in shrink fits are %15 -% 20 smaller than the interference fits. However the specimens were chosen in two different tolerances, the results showed that the method of the fit is more important than the tolerances. KEYWORDS: Interference fits, shrink fits, surface roughness, shrink fits of the shaft-hole mates COMMITTEE: Prof. Dr. Hikmet RENDE Prof. Dr. Narin ÜNAL Prof. Dr. Alper GÜLSÖZ 11
