Ottoman-France relations in the Tanzimat Period (Military, economic and cultural) 1839–1876

In this study, military, economic and cultural relations between the Ottoman Empire and France were examined during the Tanzimat Period (1839 – 1876). In the context of the internal and foreign political relations of the Ottoman Empire, France's influence in the Ottoman Empire was questioned. Therefore, the purpose of this thesis is how the developments in the Tanzimat Period affect the military, economic and cultural relations between the Ottoman State and France. In the context of the assumption of the study, it was assumed that France was active in all the policies of the Ottoman Empire during this period. There was no study in the literature that detailed the military, economic and cultural relations of the Ottoman Empire with France during the Tanzimat period. In this respect, it is thought that this study will close the gap in the literature. For the findings obtained in the study literature and literature review were conducted.The findings obtained in the context of the results of the study are important. In this context, France had an important impact on the cultural life of the Ottoman Empire during the Tanzimat period. The most important factor that affects this is the dominance of French as a foreign language in education systems. In addition, the dominant power of France in European political life facilitated the approval of the French culture. Therefore, the influence of French has a great importance in the Westernization of the Ottoman Empire. However, the preparation of the administrative order of the Ottoman Empire by modelling from France led to the managers becoming dependent on French aid, so France was the country that had the most influence on the administrative and legal developments during this period. However, the privileges offered to France in commercial and financial fields have also begun to be recognized in other European countries with increasingly different commercial contracts. Therefore, it can be said that these privileges have negative effects on the economy of the Ottoman Empire. On the other hand, the Ottoman state entered a period of renewal under the influence of France. It should be pointed out that France has a temporary influence on Ottoman Empire which occurred only during the Tanzimat era.
