The facade forms of Ottoman houses built in Rhodes city urban after the Tanzimat Era

Rhodes was one of the most prosperous kingdoms of the Hellenistic period. It is situated in the strategic point of the Aegean Sea, the key point to the Mediterranean trade. The work has included the Ottoman houses built in Rhodes after the Tanzimat era and has tried to place the original house types in the tradition of the Ottoman architecture. Part I included the physical features of Rhodes Island as well as the island?s past and the historical progress of the City of Rhodes. The influence of these factors in the housing tradition of the City of Rhodes has been established. In Part II, the work has continued with field survey. The houses in the research project have been assessed and photographed. In the light of these, relievos and building catalogues have been created and the figures in relation to the façades have been gathered. The elements in the structure of the façades have been inspected. In Part III, the evaluation part of the work, the façade features of the Rhodian houses have been explained with tables and photographs in the light of the samples in the catalogues, the similar and different qualities have been classified and the elements characterising the façade have been studied. In Part IV, The Rhodian houses have been compared to the Aegean ? Western Anatolian and Mediterranean samples. These studies and comparisons have displayed the similarities and differences between the façade forms of the houses built during the Ottoman rule following the Tanzimat in Rhodes and the samples in Anatolia.
