Abstract (EN)
The monumental buildings being the symbols of social, cultural, historical and architectural values, have given birth to the idea of protecting them. One of the main areas of action of that protective approach is adaptive reuse, which aims the transfer of those buildings to the next generations and the provision of cultural sustainability. In this protective scope, adaptive reuse provides an opportunity for those historical values to continue their existence which enables a society to interact with their yesterdays. The examination of the interventions which allow for reuse due to the sustainability of historically monumental buildings in a single structure and environment scale, requires a multifaceted approach. In this context, the compatibility of the adaptive reuse program with the unique spatial identity is one of the main problems during the design process. During the adaptive reuse, since it is targeted that the development of a design which includes the future use of a building independent from its original function; the balance of transformation between the protection of the historical background and the understandability of it should be established. In the scope of this study; the original function, the historical and the cultural characteristics of the buildings were researched, and it was tried to be determined how the original function is responded with what kind of a design within the scope of the renovation project. The aim of this dissertation is to examine the concept of sustainability in the protection of historically monumental buildings in terms of adaptive reuse, and to reveal the data that will provide multifaceted thinking by analyzing the problems brought about by the new function. In this study; for the compatibility analysis of the designs with the genuineness, historical and cultural background of the buildings during the adaptive reuse projects; initially the theoretical groundwork, historical background and the current approaches and problems were criticized.
