Abstract (EN)
In this thesis, the current status and conservation practices regarding both tangible (architectural and physical) and intangible (social and cultural) values in Cami-i Kebir Neighbourhood, which reflects the multi-layered historical texture of Diyarbakır, have been examined in depth. The research was structured using a qualitative method and was conducted through detailed inventory analyses and field observations of 36 accessible civil and monumental buildings located in the neighborhood. In addition, the relationships established by the residents of the neighbourhood with the space, the sense of belonging, spatial usage practices and conservation attitudes have been systematically evaluated through semi-structured interviews. The findings reveal that the traditional architectural character has been largely preserved in Cami-i Kebir Neighbourhood; however, there have been some fractures in the urban texture and social relations due to modernization, economic pressures and functional transformations. The study demonstrates that the conservation of the historical environments should not be limited to restoration and registration processes; dynamics such as user experiences, social memory and urban identity should also be addressed with a holistic perspective. Comprehensive analyses and interview findings in Cami-i Kebir Neighbourhood have indicate that local participation, traditional lifestyle, social spaces and functional adaptation should be evaluated simultaneously in the development of sustainable conservation policies. With its multi-layered and dynamic structure, this neighbourhood has an important place in the survival of Diyarbakır's urban identity and historical environment.
