Computer aided analysis of historic structures: Example of Patara antique city theater stage structure

Historical buildings are the rarest artifacts left over from the past. Natural disasters that they live in and as a result of the earthquakes that are the most important of these disasters are damaged. It is very important to provide the necessary numerical parameters that can be useful for possible renewal studies in order to ensure that historical structures are best preserved and transferred to future generations. This information can only be achieved by carrying out the appropriate structural analysis which well represents the behavior. In this thesis, firstly, introduction of historical structures, determination of structural system properties, determination of materials and material properties used, structural modeling and types of damage that may occur in a structure during a possible earthquake are given. Then, as a case study, computer aided structural modeling and analysis processes were carried out for the scene structure of the Antique City Theater in the Patara region. These processes were performed by using the SAP2000 computer program and the finite element method. As a modeling technique, the "Macro Modeling" technique, which is suitable for large-scale constructions, has been utilized. The stone walls forming the structure are represented by planar shell elements in the model. The analysis results obtained; stress and shape change, various comments were made about the weaknesses of the structure, possible damage cases and possible measures. Along with this, related parameters (modal vectors, base shear forces, etc.) related to earthquake behavior of the structure are determined. Thus, it is aimed to provide the necessary numerical parameters, which can be useful for possible renewal work of this structure.
