Abstract (EN)

Civilizations are increasingly focusing on the cultural heritage that has survived from the past to the present. These cultural heritages express the richness of civilizations, all civilizations keep their hertages stable to survive for along the centuries and to serve their purpose. For this aim, current seismic conditions must be evaluated. After evaluating their current seismic conditions, it is important to extend their lifespan with appropriate strengthening techniques and transfer them to future generations to build a bridge between past and future generations. One of the biggest threats to our rich cultural heritage is the earthquake that poses a risk to a large part of our country. Majority of the structures that is mostly affected by the earthquakes is the historical masonry structures. Since historical masonry structures were built with the existing material possibilities of the region where they were built, each structure has a different technical and engineering feature. Due to the active use of historical masonry structures generally in Turkey and particularly in Malatya where is high seismic activity, it is necessary to assess their current seismic condition. It is necessary to estimate safety level of all cultural heritages after a possible earthquake. In order to minimize the damage and to prevent total collapse, the service life of the historical heritages should be extended by assessing the current seismic performance of the structure. In this study, the existing seismic performance of Historical Yusuf Ziya Pasha Mosque in Malatya was evaluated. Within the scope of the study, a 3D solid finite element model of the historical mosque was generated and material properties were determined by non-destructive testing methods. The natural vibration periods of the historical mosque were determined dynamic identification utilizing biaxial accelerometers. Environmental vibrations were used for the dynamic identification. Finite element model was updated according dynamic characteristics. Nonlinear analyses were performed in two stages. Firstly, a nonlinear static analysis was performed. Then, nonlinear time history analyses of the historic mosque were performed using the earthquake records of May 1, 2003 Bingöl, November 23, 2011 Van-Edremit and January 24, 2020 Sivrice-Elazığ. Based on the drawn data from nonlinear analysis, possible damages to the structure were determined.
