Development of İzmir accommodation facilities in the historical process, changes in the social structure of Basmane region and its interaction with accommodation businesses

The places where people live together are not just the areas where architectural structures are found. As these places start life in some way, they develop later and disappear over time. However, it is still the responsibility of us humans to take actions that will save them from extinction or take them further. The Basmane Region of Izmir has also hosted many societies for a long time and sometimes faced the danger of extinction. However, each time it has transformed into a different social and economic area with the effect of the society on the region or the effect of the region on the society. In this study, it was investigated how the accommodation role that Basmane assumed throughout his life due to his location evolved over time and what problems he faced. The main purpose of this thesis is to examine the development of accommodation facilities in the province of Izmir, as well as to research the Basmane region, which is an important commercial and social life area for Izmir, in terms of accommodation facilities and tourism. How and in what way accommodation facilities emerged in Izmir and Basmane region, and the phases of these facilities in life until today were investigated. Qualitative research method was used to study in detail in the field and to solve the research problem. During the field study carried out between February 5, 2022, and April 30, 2022, it was aimed to identify the changes and social problems of the hotels located in the area known today as Basmane region and to propose solutions. Finally, the details and results of the qualitative analysis made with the interview technique are given to finish the study. At the beginning of the solution suggestions of the people in the field, the cleaning of the environment and the improvement of the texture is a common opinion of almost all the operators. Property owners are expected to make investments, the state and the municipality to deal with the issue in more detail and participate in the financing of the renovation.
