In the historical process a local example of architectural stratification: Büyükada

The built environment, a human product, has been shaped to reflect socio-cultural, economic, and technological dynamics, combined with natural dynamics throughout the historical process. As these dynamics change according to periods, various strata are formed in the built environment. Likewise, as these dynamics change according to periods, different strata are included in the built environment. Observations to be made through the strata formed between the periodical change thresholds specific to each place offer arguments that tell the story of the formation of that place. However, choosing an area that preserves its strata like a palimpsest is necessary to make these observations. This study aims to read and classify the changes in the built environment in the sample area of Princess Island. This multi-layered settlement preserves its layers due to its multicultural social structure and periodic changes under the guidance of the palimpsest concept. In the study, at first, the change processes of the built environment were examined by classifying them according to the change thresholds specific to the region. Then, analysis of change in the context of stratification was carried out with the help of scales established on the triangle of area, structure, and toponymy. Finally, stratified associations that can be interpreted have been identified, and the information synthesized throughout this process has been interpreted under the theoretical light of the concept. The Palimpsest concept as a research tool in a multi-layered settlement is proposed for the field studies carried out in this direction. The information obtained from the research carries enlightening messages to consider what suggestions can be set forth to protect the layers.
