Abstract (EN)
Just as any object, phenomenon or formation has an identity, every city has own identity. This identity makes them stand out from the whole by making them different from the others. Factors that bring unique qualities to cities and affect the formation, development and change of these qualities are also different for each city. In this thesis study; the concepts related to the identity of the city were privatized in the example of the Stratonikeia Ancient City – Eskihisar Village, and it was tried to be conveyed the reader. Every city with a historical past develops, changes and transforms in the process. Historical cities contain the traces of every evolution they have undergone over time, in layers. Layers sometimes become a part of urban development and transformation by being deleted, collapse, destroyed and sometimes added, moved and multiplied. With each architectural layer formed, the identity belonging to the city and the period is transferred from generation to generation or disappears. Thus, the study examined the concepts of historical city, stratification, identity and the relationships of these concepts with each other. In thesis; the change, transformation and evolution of the ancient city of Stratonikeia – Eskihisar Village, which still keeps the traces of many civilizations alive throughout the ages, are examined. In the city; Hellenistic, Roman, Byzantine, Principalities, Ottoman and Republican Period structures exhibit a nested settlement. In this way, it also includes a deep architectural layering. In study, it was investigated to what extent the architectural stratification of the city affected the formation of urban identity in different periods. In conclusion; the physical, historical and social change along with the periodic diversity that occurred in the long-term were also examined, and the distinctive effects of the stratified structure on the identity were revealed. Thesis; it reveals that the effect of stratification on the formation of urban identity is inevitable and it have positive-negative effect on the urban identity the may.
