Tashkoprîzâde's Sarhu Ahkak-i Adudiyye

The aim of this thesis is to evaluate Tashkoprîzâde?s Sarhu Ahlak-ı Adudiyye in the context of Islamic ethical thought. Generally, Islamic ethical theories can be classified into four groups; namely dogmatic, theological, philosophical and religious. Tashkoprîzâde?s treatise is close to philosophical ethics and reflects Ottoman Islamic Philosophical Ethical Tradition. This study on Tasköprîzâde?s work, which is a commentary on Îcî?s concise work, will be a small contribution to the ethics studies in Ottoman Era. To evaluate this treatise in the text- commentary context is also the aim of this thesis. The researcher tries to examine the commentary tradition in Ottoman Era, ask why Tasköprîzâde selected this work and what contribution he has made. Tasköprîzâde here takes Îci?s principles, explains the obscure matters and completes the deficient parts. The researcher analyzes and edits two parts of this book which is actually four parts. The first part of the thesis presents his life and works. It introduces Tasköprîzâde?s cultural, political and social context in order to understand his age and his intellectual carrier. In the second part, the thesis examines the definition of ethics, its subject, its aim and its place in the classification of science. It also analyses basic concepts of ethics, changing of human?s moral, concept of soul, goodness and happiness. Tasköprîzâde here supposes three pars of the soul; reason, emotion and desire. Then he explains the virtues of wisdom, courage, chastity, which are born from the said parts, and finally justice that is born from the harmony of the other three virtues. The sub-branches of all these virtues constitute major part of the thesis. In examining his analysis, the researcher tries to go back to Plato and Aristotle who are considered as the founders of philosophical ethics. References are also made to Ibn Sînâ, Farâbî, Ghazâli, Miskavayh, Tûsî, Devvânî?s works in order to follow the tradition. The parts of human?s deeds are presented in the third part. Other subject in this chapter is virtues and their sub-branches as was said. In the appendix there is an edition of two parts of the Tasköprîzâde?s work. For this edition, the author?s own text which is recorded in Beyazıd Library, is uded.
