In this study, effects of various operating conditions on treatment efficiency and biogas production were investigated for anaerobic treatment of poultry manure wastewater by using two laboratory scale anaerobic sludge bed reactors (ASBR). 2 different dilution sets were conducted with 2 different hydraulic retention times (?h = 15.7 gün ve ?h = 12 gün), and therefore 4 steady-state conditions were considered.In the first section, problems caused by poultry wastes and the objectives of this study were briefly explained.In the second section, important findings of a comprehensive literature review regarding anaerobic treatment of poultry and livestock wastes were summarised based on the present subject.In the third section, general characteristics of poultry wastes used in the study, technical description of the used anaerobic sludge bed reactors, steps of the start-up period, experimental equipments, and analytical procedures considered in this study were presented.In the fourth section, experimental results of the experimental sets (1+8 and 1+6) and evaluations were given. In the same section, morphological properties of the granular biomass used as seed sludge, results of SEM (Scanning Electron Microscope) analysis, and hydrodynamic calculations regarding granular biomass and results of the experimental studies based on the investigation of behaviour of the sludge column were presented in detail.In the last section, mathematical modelling studies (non-linear regression analysis and kinetic modelling) were carried out based on the steady-state data obtained from two experimental sets (1+8 and 1+6) by using DataFit® engineering program (version 8.1.69, Copyright© 1995-2005 Oakdale Engineering). In the non-linear regression analysis, based on the experimental findings, results of non-linear modeling studies on the prediction of total COD removal efficiency (ES), daily biogas production (Qg), and concentration of effluent COD (Se) were given in detail. The steady-state data were also evaluated in the scope of 4 kinetic models (Chen-Hashimoto?s kinetic model, Stover-Kincannon?s kinetic model, 2nd order kinetic model of Grau et al., and logarithmic kinetic model). The obtained kinetic coefficients were compared with the literature data and the calculated values were interpreted based on the type of used subsrate and also imposed organic loading conditions.
