The reflections of Soviet intervention of Afghanistan and its effects on the Turkish Grand National Assembly Records(1979-1980)

This study analyses the reflections of the USSR's intervention in Afghanistan in the parliament between 1979-1980. The intervention of the Soviet Union in Afghanistan coincided with the end of the Cold War period and the Soviet Union entered a process of dissolution shortly after the withdrawal of the Red Army. The common view of current and later commentaries on the USSR's intervention in Afghanistan is that the intervention was to the detriment of the USSR. The intervention was regarded as one of the most important events of the Cold War period and led to debates on various issues in Turkey's political environment. The majority of the sources of the study consist of parliamentary minutes. Apart from these, books, academic articles and theses also support the sources. The study consists of three chapters in total, including an introduction and a conclusion. In the first chapter, Afghan-Soviet relations are analysed through the political developments and leaders of Afghanistan in the 1970s. In the second part, the repercussions of the USSR's intervention in Afghanistan in the parliament were collected and analysed under headings and the justifications for the USSR's intervention in Afghanistan were tried to be examined through Soviet statements.
