The impact of Tafsir al-Manar on the interpretation of the message of the Qur'an

This thesis aims to examine the influences of Tafsīr al-Manār in Muḥammad Asad's The Message of the Qur'ān (translation-exegesis). The study offers an important example for observing how modern Qur'anic interpretations interact with one another. The thesis is divided into two main parts. In the first part, the approaches to the Qur'an and the intellectual structures of Tafsīr al-Manār and The Message of the Qur'ān are analyzed. In that section, the distinctive methods of interpretation employed by each author are especially emphasized. In the second part of the thesis, particular thematic areas are selected — such as verses related to creation, eschatology, miraculous events, and certain legal rulings — and the interpretations found in both works are comparatively analyzed. To more clearly reveal where each author diverges from the classical exegetical tradition, the study also includes classical-era interpretations and evaluates these views in a comparative manner. In this way, it seeks to demonstrate in which fields and to what extent the Manār school's influence is visible in Asad's exegesis. The study thus not only forges a link between these two works, but also attempts to assess common features and interpretive diversity within the contemporary Qur'anic commentary tradition.
