Political currents in the Single-Party Period: An analysis of ideas journals (1923-1945)

The aim of this study is to reveal the appearances of Islamism, Turkism and Socialism movements that emerged in the Ottoman Empire in the 19th century, through intellectual journals with a high ability to express the political conjuncture. It is known that the main political movements emerged in order to save the Ottoman Empire were visible in various intellectual journals in the period they emerged. In the Single-Party years, it was determined that these movements were mostly visible in intellectual circles rather than active political opposition. Scope of work; Kadro, Ağaç and Çınaraltı intellectual journals were selected in order to measure the representation power of these oppositional movements in the Single Party years through the idea journals. Through the mental backgrounds of the four prominent writers of the selected opinion magazines, the power of expressing their dissenting opinions in the one-party years has been tried to be understood. The emergence of political movements in Turkey, the appearance of opinion journalism in the One-Party years and the relationship between the power of expression and democracy in these years were other questions that were tried to be answered. As a result of the study; In the single-party years, it was seen that a control mechanism was operating on the press and broadcasting, as it was in almost every area of social life. In these years when printing and control existed, selected idea magazines; It was observed that they prepared their articles carefully. It has been observed that the owners of the journals try to keep good relations with the state administration. Therefore, it was understood that the authoritarian atmosphere of the single-party years narrowed the field of action for opinion journals other than the official ideology, and the ability of free expression that should exist in democracies could not be fully achieved.
