The determination weight of thyroid gland and thyroid uptake ratio with technetium 99m pertechnetate

Abstract (EN)

In this study, we aimed to measure horisontal and vertical lengths, and weights of thyroid gland with the scintigraphic methods and to investigate how these parameters change in various (different) thyroid disorders by comparing these parameters with thyroid uptake ratios. The study included 1 1 1 patients (73 women, 38 men) with the age range: 18-77 (mean age: 42.3 ±15.6 years). Of 111 patients, the thyroid glands were classifred according to scintigraphic findings (images) into 6 groups as normal, hypoactive nodular, hyperactive nodular, minimal diffuse hyperplasic, intermediate diffuse hyperplasic and mixed (hyperactive plus hypoactive) nodular thyroid gland. At the and of the scintigraphic evaluation of the thyroid lobes of the six groups; 39 right and 35 left thyroid lobes were in normal ranges (limits), hypoactive nodular appearance was detected in 27 right and 30 left thyroid lobes, hyperactive noduler appearance was observed in 13 right and 16 left thyroid lobes, minimal diffuse hiperplasia was present in 26 right and 26 left thyroid lobes intermediate diffuse hyperplasia was seen in 2 right thyroid lobes, and mixed nodular appearance (hyperactive and hypoactive) was observed (detected, determined) in 3 right and 2 left thyroid lobes. Then, uptake ratios, weights and dimensions (vertcal and horizontal) of each lobe were evaluated (measured, determined); these values in six groups were statistically compared (analysed) with ANOVA test by using Post Hoc Tukey method. The correlation studies of these parameters with in the group were perfomed with Pearson correlation analysis. In these 6 groups, there were significant differances in terms of thyroid uptake ratio, weight and dimensions of the thyroid glands. Although there was a significant correlation between the weights and dimensions of the thyroid glands with in each group, no significant correlation was detected between with weights and dimensions. This indicates that the size and weight of thyroid gland and thyroid uptake ratio are independent of each other in various thyroid diseases. Technetium 99m pertechnetate scintigraphy was evaluated (accepted) as a gold standart in the evaluation of uptake ratio, weight and size of thyroid gland.
