Evaluation of bone mass at idiopathic hypercalciurik patients with recurrent urinary system stone disease

Abstract (EN)

Objective: It is well known that some patients with urinary system stone disesase an idiopathic hypercalciuria (IH) may exhibit decreased bone mineral density (BMD). The objective of this study was to determine the effect of high urinary calcium levels on bone mineral density among the patients with urinary system stone disesase.Materials and Methods: Among 53 adult patients (48 men and 5 premenopausal women) with urinary system stone disesase, hypercalciuria (urinary calcium excretion > 200 mg/day) was observed in 31 (29 men and 2 premenopausal women). Theese 31 patients were classified as study group and the others were classified as control group. Vertebra, femur neck and total femur BMD was measured in study and control group. BMD was measured by dual-energy x-ray absorbtiometry. The BMD and T scores in study group compared with the control group. Serum levels of calcium, C-telopeptid, osteocalcin, parathormon, alkaline phosphatase, 25 (OH) D3 was determined.Results: When analysing lomber vertebra bone mineral density osteopenia and osteoprosis risk in study group was 4,5 times higher than the control group. And when analysing femur neck and total femur BMD, there was no difference between the osteopenia and osteoprosis risk in study group and control group. The average of body mass index (BMI) values in study group was significantly higher than the control group. When assesing bone turnover markers, there was no difference between the study and control groups.Conclusion: Patients with urinary system stone disesase should be eveluated for IH and those with IH should be screened for ostepenia and osteoporosis, especially in vertebra.Key Words: BMI, DEXA, İdiopathic hypercalciuria, Osteoporosis, Urinary system stone disesase.
