Abstract (EN)
In this thesis, the research has been conducted on cultural representations in television serials which have been shot in Mardin as an urban space. Although television serial is a type of drama in which interrelated issues are approached by following a specific scenario flow, the subjects, characters, and social relationships in the serials can be affected by real-life or take a role in reproducing real-life dominant patterns. The use of space is one of the elements that enable these effects to be observed tangibly and thus the relationship between the texts and reality crystallizes. The choice of space as a technical component of the television serials production reveals a discursive activity in which the preference for a specific geographical area, namely physical space, is framed and reproduced. In this thesis, the following three forms of representations in the television serials whose spatial universe is Mardin are problematized: i. The relationship between representations and reality. ii. The contents of the representations encumbered with specific presuppositions. iii. Orientalist and cartoonish forms of representations that "develops the ability to produce intellectual and aesthetic images by fitting into the autonomy of tradition by drawing zigzags in popular culture" (Said, 2016, p. 156). In this regard, practices of articulation of the representations of Mardin from its geographical location to its history, from its heterogeneous social structure to its traditional life patterns, from the reproduction of social life to its architecture, and the discourse levels arising from these practices have been taken into focus. As the main motivation that shapes the production and distribution of both media texts and all industrial cultural commodities, the maximization of profit and the circulation of this industrial representation also occurs in Mardin serials through specific narrative and technical components. The serials that reach the audience at the prime time through television, which is still a basis in mass media, carries some messages, namely discourses as well as technical, fictional, and political-economic phenomena. These discourses are an ideological, cartoonish, supporter of the status quo and have a characteristic that creates common-sense assumptions towards the way the audience perceives life with all its dimensions. In this thesis, these discourses have been dealt with in particular the television serials shot in Mardin and it has been aimed to reveal and discuss the representations of cultural elements in these serials and the discourses produced by these representations. Consequently, the scope of this thesis has consisted of the serials of Mardin, where some fictional events and the network of relationships are reflected on the screens within a specific scenario systematic. The use of space in the productions under the title of Mardin serials and the representations of cultural elements related to that space are so diverse that they do not allow a holistic classification. Therefore, in this thesis, the parts of the television serials that shot and ended in Mardin have been determined as the research universe. These serials consist of Kara Duvak, Bir Bulut Olsam, Adını Kalbime Yazdım, Kadim Dostum, Aşktan Kaçılmaz and Jan. In order to follow the thesis in a line for its purpose, the research sample has been determined based on the purposive sampling, which is commonly used in the qualitative researches. While in the first episodes of the serials, general information about the characters, place, story, network of relationships, and scenario systematic are presented, the paradigmatic constructions in the narrative are closed in the final episode. The universe of the thesis has been limited based on this information and the first two episodes and final episodes of the serials have been determined as the research sample. Thus, representations in a total of eighteen episodes watched from the serials have been chosen as the units of analysis. The presence of interactions on regional scale forms of social solidarity and traditional – cultural production patterns in the serials has enabled the discovery of a biographical cultural structure. Thus, it has been discursively framed that culture was organized through representations, association with identities, production and consumption, mechanisms of distribution, and use. Thereby, the power relations, contradictions, discriminations, and assumptions fed by the discourse have been subjected to analysis. In this context, research questions of the thesis have been prepared based on the following features of critical discourse analysis, which Fairclough and Wodak (1997) said: Critical discourse analysis deals with social problems, recognizes that power relations have a discursive appearance, conducts a constructive work for society and culture, works ideologically, is historical, establishes a link between text and society, provides an interpretive and explanatory output, is a form of social action (p. 271-280). Based on this, the research questions of the thesis have been formulated as follows: • How are cultural definitions built-in serials and which identities are associated with them? • What traditional and contemporary factual basis are the representations framed in the construction of culture? Therefore, in which narrative items are cultural forms of production fed by eclectic relationships? • Which narrative items from the relations between cultural representations and social structures and institutions can be followed? • What kinds of cultural representations are presented in the forms of social solidarity, patriarchy, and class conflicts in television serials? Which dichotomies can be read from these cultural representations? • What kind of representation system is encountered regarding space, which is a technical element in the television serials, especially in the axis of the usage practices of urban space? In this context, how is Mardin framed as urban space? In order to find answers to the above questions, historical institutionalization of television and television serials in Turkey and in the world has been discussed in the first part of this thesis. In this context, a description has been made for the genres of television serials and inflation in the market of broadcasting with commercial broadcasting in Turkey. While the broad range of contents produced by the broadcasting – television serial industry is outlined, new characteristic trends of the market that have emerged in the 2000s have been explained. Accordingly, within this spectrum, the narratives of the establishment – origin, sitcoms, spiritual television serials, recent political narratives, mafia television serials, and rural television serials have been listed and the focus has been directed to the rural television serials. In the second part of the thesis, the interest in rural spaces in the Turkish broadcasting – television serial industry has been examined. This interest in urban spaces apart from Istanbul, where the centre of Turkey's broadcasting industry, has been discussed with reference to the following conceptions that in the literature of social sciences: i. Space on a general scale. ii. Urban space. iii. The possibilities of the space. In this framework, firstly, the concept-based historical development of the space has been shed light on. Afterwards, discussions about the reflections of modernism on the space have been mentioned and the possibilities of the space have been listed. Thus, the use of central or peripheral spaces in television serials in Turkey has been examined. From this point of view, it has been focused on the reflection of nostalgic imaginations on the rural spaces to the cultural representation practices. In this context, it has been emphasized that the literature of the Cultural Studies School was determined as the theoretical framework of this thesis in order to analyze these cultural representations. In the third section, where the theoretical framework of the thesis is laid out, first of all, the concept sets presented by positivist epistemology in order to understand social issues and these sets' dilemmas have been explained in parallel with the development of the scientific methodology. Then, a historical track has been presented on how positivism takes place in the administrative/mainstream models in the communication sciences literature. In this framework, the "strong" and "weak" effects paradigms have been briefly mentioned. Then, a theoretical line has been mentioned in which communication was conceived as a social, economic, cultural, and political process and media and communication systems were evaluated as an institution that was at the centre of the social structures and the power struggles of the actors: Critical social theory. Thus, both the general framework of critical social theory and the general framework of Marxism, the basis of critical social theory, have been summarized. The establishment of the Cultural Studies School and the researches of theorists who determined the epistemological framework of the school have been explained based on the axis that critical social theory brought to cultural studies. In this context, firstly, Gramsci's conceptions of "hegemony", "intellectuals", and "historical block" have been explained. Secondly, Althusser's analyzes of "ideological state apparatuses" and "overdetermination" have been given. Thirdly, the concept of "articulation" of Laclau has been explained. Finally, Voloshinov's approach to "the multi-accentuality of the sign" has been introduced. The fact that the ontological preferences of the Cultural Studies School, which focuses on human scientific disciplines, turned towards media studies together with Hall has provided a legacy to the literature on the media analysis of the school. In this thesis, the text and audience-oriented researches in this heritage have been also mentioned. In this framework, firstly, not only the text-oriented studies of Hall but also the studies in which he developed concepts and models on media texts and the audiences have been included. Secondly, the contributions to the literature with Morley's researches, which tested Hall's hypothetical "model of encoding – decoding" have been emphasized. Thirdly, Fiske, who stands out with his popular culture-based, text-based, and audience-based researches, has been mentioned. In addition to all, in the literature of cultural studies, the information of the researches about the television medium and more particularly the television serials that constitute the research object of this thesis have been also shared. In this framework, besides serial analysis of researchers such as Hobson, Ang, Buckingham, feminist media studies of people such as McRobbie and Radway have been also included. Thus, it has been emphasized that television medium and television serials are also important research objects in the cultural studies in which the effect of the active audience is generally discussed in order to reveal the meaning in cultural commodities. In this context, with the epistemological understanding of the Cultural Studies School, the general trends in researches on both cultural commodities and television texts have been expressed in two ways: i. Discourse analysis of the meanings framed in the texts. ii. Reception studies on how the audience understood the messages in these texts. In the fourth part of the thesis, the findings obtained from the conducted field research have been laid out. In this framework, the discourses filtered from the cultural representations in the serials have been thematically listed and discussed. Based on the research questions, representations on social-scale organizations, oral traditions, the system of values, beliefs, patterns of production and consumption, and interculturalism have been focused as components that define cultural representations in the serials. Thus, it has been emphasized that the culture was organized through certain signifiers, belongings, relations of production, and objectification forms and the culture was shaped through texts produced in the media as an institution of the capitalist system. As a result, the following discursive themes have been reached in the Mardin serials: i. Syntagmatic elements and presented subjects for the solution with paradigmatic contrasts in narrative scale. ii. Regional representations in the determination of both space and cultural structure. iii. Mechanical forms of social solidarity. iv. Discriminatory practices for working classes and women, and in this context, patriarchal ideology, and gender inequality. In the first subtitle, where narrative contrasts are discussed, a dualistic conceptualization for the characters in the manner that "insiders" and "outsiders" has been developed. Thus, it has been detected the discourse that the intervention of various social agents from outside Mardin is needed for the solution of the problems that arise in Mardin, such as the feudal system, gender inequality, and illegal activities. The second subtitle, in which regional representations with spatial and cultural context are discussed, has been examined on two axes. The first is the use of urban space in serials. In this context, representations about Mardin as a border city and the meanings produced by urban panoramas and their backgrounds have been presented. As the second axis, the present-day reflections of traditional patterns on the serials and the cultural production forms shaped by these reflections have been examined. Thus, the representations of traditional and cultural heritage inherited from the past to the present, from the business and working relations to the organization of public life, from the traditional assumptions to the intercultural interaction, have been focused on. Due to the prevalence of feudal relations in life in the serials, mechanical social solidarity forms have been examined in the third subtitle. The articulation practices of feudal and traditional power with bureaucratic, political, and economic power structures have been analyzed. In this context, in addition to the archaic processes such as feud and rules, the practices of coexistence of modern and neoliberal occupations such as spatial enclosure and infrastructure works have been laid out. Discriminative representations in Mardin serials have been presented in the fourth subtitle in the findings of the thesis. Accordingly, two discriminatory practices aimed at the working classes and the women have become prominent in the serials. Therefore, discourses about both an implicit class conflict and the gender inequality determined by the patriarchal ideology have been resolved. Consequently, as it can be seen in the levels of analyzed discourse, in this thesis, the characteristics of the media as a social institution that circulates and reproduces the dominant ideas have been demonstrated regarding the serials as a television narrative. So much so that it seems that it is a pluralist broadcasting approach to focus on the daily and social relations created by traditional and mechanical forms of solidarity in the Mardin serials. In fact, a discursive system for the reproduction of competitive, possessive, individualistic, inequivalent, and sexist values has been observed in the serials. Thus, it has been questioned that the serials reveal a culturalist, cartoonish, and elitist perspective through class conflicts, patriarchal domination, and gender inequality.
