Özet (EN)

In this work, Jazz Theory was tried to prensent with a theoretic sorting fiction, prioritizing pureness and clarity and also in a historical collectivity, from its beginning to end of 20th century. Even if the horizontal structure was made mention of partly, generally the vertical structure of jazz was analyzed. Whole theoretical and historical process was prepared by taking literature search, resource selection and international standards into consideration. Firstly, in the introduction, the basis of the theoretical issues mentioned were prepared and information was given about the general lines of the building to be followed subsequently. Then, in the second part, detailed information about the academic foundations of the research and the research systematic of the thesis were given. At the beginning of the third chapter, the historical development process of the theoretical systematics included in the subject discussed was examined in three main periods. The transitions between the periods and their rational equivalents in music were based on the theoretical part to be transferred. Then the jazz theory was dealt with starting from the most basic place "Chord Structures", which is the most basic place possible, and a multi-faceted perspective has been tried to be followed whenever possible. For this reason, the relationship between chord and scale (vertical-horizontal) was also discussed. In the vertical polyphony axis of the dissertation, the subject of "Voicing" was discussed and the most known and directly performance-oriented techniques in the literature were examined. Since "Voicing" is an accompaniment-based subject, first of all, the playing techniques of the written one were examined, then the subject of "Modern Chord Progression" was discussed. This subject was tried to explain from basic principles to the use of cadences with all the main lines. Along with this subject, an effort was made to create a framework of "jazz harmony" in the basic sense. Gathering all the theoretical issues in a framework makes "Modern Block Harmonization" technique, which is one of the basis of modern jazz, more comprehensible. In the third part, the theoretical structure; starting from the basic jazz theory systematics, including the "Modern Block Harmonization" technique, which is one of the most important techniques of contemporary jazz music at the end of the 20th century. Then, the "Modern Block Harmonization" technique was sampled originally on selected jazz standards. In the conclusion part, an objective examination of the theoretical and historical structures discussed was tried to be put forward. Throughout the thesis, a language for integrated and applied theory thought was used, and the expression was tried to be strengthened with the examples given.
