Abstract (EN)

The student?s having a clear understanding of `what he or she doing? within the contex ofarchitectural education is significant issue. Especially, the firs encounter of the student with adesign course is full of potential problems due to the completely different nature of the subjectand leads the student to fell himself / herself unrelated with new education system. Designassignments are usually accomplished in an ad/hoc fashion without a clear understanding ofprocess involved. In Turkey, for the students who are accustomed to quantitative approaches, the basic designstudio, where they first meet the concepts of design, has significant importance inunderstanding the process of design, expressing himself / herself and systematic thinking. This study investigates how and why basic design education came into existence and whatmodifications it has encountered within today?s university education. While carrying out thestudy, different approaches to basic design education by three different universities (namelyMETU, YTU, and ITU) are analyzed and survey about the subject is conducted on theirstudents. On the basis of findings from the researches end the surveys on `basic design education,? thisthesis presents the problematic and discusses new learning techniques, computational designand integration of shape grammars, on wich these methods are developed, into architecture.Key Words: Design, Basic Design Education, Computational Design, Shape Grammar
