Abstract (EN)

Architecture is an interdisciplinary profession, directly linked to art as well as scientific fields like engineering, technology, and informatics. Consequently, architectural education includes fundamental design courses that explore the integration of aesthetics and design alongside technical subjects. Maximizing architecture students' knowledge of visual perception theory can be achieved within formal education through fundamental design and Gestalt perception theory training. During fundamental design education, students continuously re-evaluate the design knowledge they acquire through their visual thinking skills and experiences, reconstructing the cognitive schemas they will use in their individual design languages. In this study, the relationship between cinema and architecture is examined through the film Parasite, chosen by the course instructors as the term project for the spring semester of the 2022-2023 academic year at Trakya University's Faculty of Architecture, Department of Architecture. The thesis comprises five chapters. The first chapter covers the purpose, scope, and methodology of the study. In the second chapter, a literature review on the relationship between cinema and architecture is conducted, focusing on shared and similar techniques. Views, interpretations, and information found in the literature are analyzed and used cohesively by referencing books, articles, theses, and relevant visuals, without compromising the unity of the topic. The third chapter provides information on the history of architectural education, the fundamental design elements and principles taught within it, and an introduction to Gestalt perception theory. In the fourth chapter, the selected film Parasite is described, followed by an evaluation of the fundamental design elements and principles that the students identified in the film, presented in tabular format. A descriptive analysis is conducted to determine which fundamental design elements and principles are used most frequently. The fifth chapter is the conclusion, where the effects and outcomes of integrating fundamental design elements, principles, and Gestalt perception theory into fundamental design education at the intersection of cinema and architecture are discussed.
