The importance of Progressivist Republican Party in turkish political life

For its being the first opposition party of the Turkish Political Background, Progressivist Republican Party is an important step in the History of Turkish Democracy. The party was an organization which was formed for the purpose of opposing by military and civilian leaders who played significant roles during National Struggle period and whose views apperantly got more and more varied once the revolutions started. Progressivist Republican Party, which was unable to show its opposition clearly to Mustafa Kemal who had a great authority on public as a liberator after the Independence War, directed its opposition directly to People?s Party, which also meant opposing Mustafa Kemal indirectly. Progressivist Republican Party strived for exercising the political power within the State. When-due to the acts of some of its parliament members and to the actions of some of its supporters- it was thought to be harmful both for the State and the regime, the Party was closed. The Sheikh Sait Riot was thought to have stemmed from the opposition and the negative propaganda of Progressivist Republican Party and of the Press which supported the views of the Party. After assessing the conditions within the country, iv Atatürk and his friends came to a point where they had to to make a choice between democracy and the revolutions; and they stood up for the revolutions. In other words, while striving to help the country have a national-secular structure, the negative effects of an opposition of this nature were found out; and ,accordingly, it was thought reasonable to continue with a single-party administration for the success of the revolutions. Owing to its being an example for the forthcoming developments in Turkish Political Life, Progressivist Republican Party is of an important place in the History of Turkish Democracy.
