Antitumor effects on cancer cells of terpenoids

Abstract (EN)

Cancer takes the first place among all the diseases that leads to death. It requires a though process to be diagnosed an treated. Lung cancer, spesificially, is known to carry the highest risk of death. Citronellol (dihidrogeraniol, C10H20O, molecular weight 156,27 g/mol) is an active asiclic alcoholic monoterpenoid substance compound, found in the oil that is extracted from the body and leaves of Rosa damescana. Citronellol is a basic active compound used worldwide in painkiller, parfumes, prevention of skin stains and diseases, and even taste and fragrance for food. The recent studies on Citronellol, given that it has an anti-fungal, anti-microbial, anti-tumor, anti-mutagenic, anti-proliferative, analgesic and cytotoxic function lead to the idea that it could be a more effective chemotherapeutic agent for anti-tumor cure. Moreover, there have been studies on developing new agents and elimination of side affects in addition to the existing cure applications. In this study, the human lung adenocarcinoma cell line A549 was used in order to elucidate the functional mechanisms and the potential proapoptotic affects of Sitronellol on the treatment of cancerous lung cells. The ordinary human bronchiak epithelium tissue cell line Beas-2B was used to compare the affects of Citronellol on cancerous cells. In our study, it was aimed to elucidate the role of Citronellol in this biochemical mechanism of action as a result of the little study on the effects of Citronellol on viability, anti-proliferation, DNA damage, cellular protein mass and apoptosis mechanism in the A549 human lung carcinoma cell line. Therefore, this study focuses on determining the anti-proliferative, anti-tumor, cytotoxic, morphologic and stuructural changes caused by Citronellol an deven contributing to its use as an anti-tumor agent in the future.
