Cyprus according to The Times newspaper (1878-1914)

The Great Britain had left the policy of protecting territorial integrity of the Ottoman Empire and begun to be interested with her lands. She had been able to apply her policy after the 1877-1878 Russo-Ottoman War which the Ottoman Empire lost Kars, Ardahan and Batum. Since she had been concerned about the Russian expansion, the Great Britain had demanded a base from the Ottoman Empire. This had been Cyprus island, an Ottoman province. The Great Britain had occupied the island after signing The Cyprus Convention with the Ottoman Empire on June 4, 1878.After occupying Cyprus, the Great Britain had carried out administrative, juridical, judicial, economical reforms, public and health works in Cyprus. Educational, religious activities and archeological excavations had also been made.In this study, British reforms and other works in Cyprus between 1878-1914 were examined in the light of The Times. British public opinion about the Ottoman System, the established British System and Cyprus island is studied on the basis of The Times which was like the official media organ of British governments. Effects of British reforms and works on the Cypriots were also handled according to The Times. The study deals some disputes about Cyprus between the Great Britain and Ottoman Empire according to the Times.The Times criticizes the Ottoman System, while it glorifies the British System in Cyprus. It doesn?t mention some other disputes about Cyprus between the Great Britain and Ottoman Empire and says almost nothing about Greek Cypriots? efforts for union with Greece.
