Abstract (EN)

Salmonella is a gram-negative bacterium that causes significant morbidity and mortality in humans worldwide. Salmonella typhi (typhoid bacteria) is the bacteria that causes the disease to spread to the intestines and circulation. Salmonellosis, which is a more serious infection, is a disease that is widely transmitted among people and is difficult to treat. Therefore, in this study, 100 samples who applied to ThiQar General Hospital and Infectious Diseases Polyclinic in ThiQar City, Iraq were collected. Received Salmonella isolates were identified by isolation using bacterial culture on Macconkey agar, xylose lysine deoxycholate and Selenit F Broth Medium. It was then confirmed by the Widal test and PCR test. In our study, 63% of the PCR results were positive, 27% were negative, and 72% were positive and 18% were negative in the Widal test results. While blood culture results were 23% positive and 77% negative, stool culture results were 29% positive and 71% negative. As a result of our study, it was concluded that PCR and Widal tests are more reliable than blood culture and stool culture and give similar results. In the diagnosis of Salmonella disease caused by S. typhi, PCR tests and Widal test should be applied together and more comprehensive studies should be done with strains from different geographical regions.
