The dependency of foreign trade and its effects on Turkey: 1980-2010 economic analysis

Today, depending on new developments in the technological field, the development of new production techniques and shortening of distances caused changes in production structures of countries and particularly, developing countries became dependant on imported inputs in terms of exportation. The most important aim of this doctoral thesis is determining the dependency of Turkey?s exportation on her importation level and development of the dependency in sectoral basis.In the introduction of the study, a comprehensive theoretical framework is created and in the following parts the development process of Turkey?s exportation and importation between 1980 to 2010 period is evaluated by the help of statistical data. In the analysis section of the study, the dependence on imports of exports in Turkey is primarily analyzed by the input-output tables prepared and published by Turkey Statistical Institute (TSI) in 1985, 1990, 1998 and 2002 years. As a result of the analysis, it is ascertained that sectors that are most dependant on imported inputs of exports in Turkish economy are the ones operating in the manufacturing industry. Due to the fact that the Input ? Output table hasn?t been issued by the TSI after 2002, the developments in the dependence on imports of exports in sectoral basis in 2003 ? 2010 period are ascertained (measured) again by the data in 2002 Input ? Output table. At this stage, Industrial Production Indices, Export Volume Indices and Import Volume Indices are benefited. In the analysis, 17 sectors that are active in manufacturing industry are focused on and first 10 sectors, whose exports are dependent on import inputs are identified. Then, the reasons of each sector?s dependency and its development over the years are examined in detail.In consequence of the study, as of 2010, it is detected that exportation is significantly dependent on importation in Radio, Television, Communication Equipment and Systems Sector, Coking Coal, Refined Petroleum Products and Nuclear Fuels Sector, Motor Vehicles and Trailers Sector, Not Elsewhere Classified Electrical Machinery and Equipment Sector, NEC Machinery and Equipment Sector, Basic Metal Industry Sector, Fabricated Metal Products Industry Sector, Chemicals and Chemical Products Sector, Textile Products Sector and the Plastics and Rubber Products Sector. In addition, although some slowdowns are seen in the development of dependency rate in sectoral basis compared to previous years, it is inferred that dependency is tend to going upward continuously.
