Auditory brainstem and auditory middle latency responses of patients with TYPE 2 diabetes mellitus

Abstract (EN)
Diabetes Mellitus (DM); It is a chronic metabolic disease that shows high blood sugar level as a result of the body's inability to produce insulin or to use insulin effectively due to resistance. Over time, high blood sugar levels can damage the vessels in the stria vascularis and nerves, causing cochleovestibular dysfunction (CVD) with a lack of nutrients and oxygen. The aim of this study; To evaluate the Auditory Brainstem Responses (ABR) and Auditory Middle Latency Responses (AMLR) results of individuals with controlled Type2 DM (HbA1c<7%) and individuals with uncontrolled Type2 DM (HbA1c>7%). In the study; Thirty patients in the controlled diabetes group, thirty patients in the uncontrolled diabetes group, and thirty healty individuals, totaling 90 participants were evaluated. Audiometric examination, acoustic immitansmetric examination, auditory brainstem response and auditory middle latency test were applied to all individuals after ear, nose and throat examinations. In the results of working; In the ABR test, a significant prolongation of bilateral V. Wave latencies was observed in uncontrolled diabetes patients compared to healthy individuals (p<0.01). In addition, a significant prolongation of bilateral III-V interpeak latencies was observed in uncontrolled diabetes patients compared to healthy individuals (p<0.01). Significant prolongation of left ear I-V interpeak latency was observed in both uncontrolled and controlled diabetes compared to healthy individuals (p<0.01). In AMLR test, only left ear Na latency value was significantly prolonged in both diabetic groups compared to healthy individuals (p<0.01). It was observed that glycemic control of diabetes had no effect on ABR and AMLR wave latencies. The result of our study revealed that Type 2 DM has an effect on the central auditory system even in individuals with normal hearing. Auditory brainstem responses seem to be useful as a method for early detection of hearing loss in individuals with diabetes. However, the same results could not be obtained for the auditory mid-latency responses with the results obtained.
