Investigation of the relationship between fatalism, patient activation and diabetes self-care behaviors in individuals with type 2 diabetes

This study aimed to examine the relationships between fatalism, patient activation and diabetes self-care behaviours of individuals with type 2 diabetes. The study was designed as a relationship-seeking type. The universe of the study consisted of all type 2 diabetes patients receiving outpatient and inpatient treatment at Aksaray Training and Research Hospital in 2024, and the sample consisted of 300 individuals who agreed to participate in the study. The research data were collected using the introductory information form, Fatalism Scale, Patient Activity Level Scale and Diabetes Self-Care Scale. As a result of the study, it was determined that there was a strong positive relationship between patient activity level and diabetes self-care, a strong negative relationship between patient activity level and fatalism, and a strong negative relationship between fatalism and patient activity level and diabetes self-care. It was found that patient activation had a significant positive effect on diabetes self-care. It was determined that fatalism had a significant negative effect on diabetes self-care and patient activation, and as fatalism increased, patient activation and diabetes self-care decreased. It was determined that patient activation had a partial mediating role in the relationship between fatalism and diabetes self-care. In line with these findings, it can be suggested that interventions aimed at increasing diabetes self-care and patient activation in individuals with type 2 diabetes should be supported with information and practices aimed at reducing fatalism.
