Abstract (EN)

Introduction: Embryologically the upper cervical spine, which extends between occiput and the C2–C3 disk space, is different from the rest of the subaxial cervical spine, and so upper cervical spine and skull base have unique complex bony, ligamentous, and vascular anatomy. One of this anatomic structure is Ponticulus Posticus (PP) .PP may be lead to of biomechanical changes of the upper cervical spine and has an effect to developing odontoid fracture. Purpose: Examina to complete or partial PP has an effect to developing odontoid fracture.Materials and Methods:With the approval from the institutional review board, cervical spine computed tomography cervical CT images of patients with odontoid type 2 fracture and the control group of patients were analyzed.CT images of 14 patients with odontoid fractures, and 13 patients with cervical trauma were evaluated, and compared for developing PP.Data were analyzed using Mann-Whitney test, and Chi-square test to assess the relationship between the presence of PP and type 2 odontoid fractures Discussion:7 of 14 patients with odontoid fracture has the PP. This study indicates that PP anomaly has a negative effects on the developing odontoid fractures . Having broad knowledge of anatomy is essential for practicing neurosurgery. Spinal balance is an important issue in spine anatomy, because one of the essential roles of the spine is to support mechanical loads in the upright position. Although many clinical aspects such as incidence, sex difference, and laterally of PP have been reported with varying results, our results are, to our knowledge, are different from previous studies, because it shows the the prevalance of PP is different in patient with odontoid type 2 fracture than other patients. Result:This study indicates that PP anomaly has a negative effects on the developing odontoid fractures . Key Word: Odontoid fraktur , pontikulus postikus ,Kimmerle anomaly
