Abstract (EN)

Sonographically Guided Large Needle Biyopsy Results of the Thyroid Gland NodulesPurpose: The purpose of our study was to evaluate safety, yield and accuracy of ultrasonography guided core-needle biopsy of the thyroid gland nodules.Methods: Between April and August 2008 at Radiology Department of Düzce University Medical School, 91 ultrasound guided thyroid gland nodular lesions FNAB and core needle biopsy procedure sampling was performed. The cytological and histological results were classified as benign, suspicious (indeterminate), malignant and inadequate for diagnosis. The ultrasonographycal features of the nodules were registered.Results: Adequate samples for assessment were obtained in 93,4% of core needle biopsies higher than compared with 84,7% of FNAB. When the both of biopsy procedure used adequate samples ratio was found in 98,9% for diagnose.After core needle biopsy 4 cases were malignant and 3 of them were diagnosed by FNAB as benign and 1 of them inadequate sample. US guided FNAB has 3,3% falce negative rate for the diagnoses of malignancy. There was no complication at 91 noduler lesion with FNAB and 4 minor complication (%4,3) were reported with core needle biopsy.There was no statistically significant difference found sonographic features of nodules with FNAB and core needle biopsy results.(p>0,05)Conclusion: US guided core needle biopsy of the thyroid gland is a safe outpatient procedure with a high diagnostic yield and accuracy.Key words: Biopsy, core needle, thyroid gland, nodul, ultrasonography, FNAB
