Serum irisin levels in patients with thyroid dysfunction before and after the treatment

Abstract (EN)
Thyroid dysfunctions are common endocrine disorders in society which affect the whole organism and causing serios imbalance in energy expenditure particularly. Various studies are made about for to prevent and improve new treatment modalities for metabolic disorders with spending altered energy, high metabolic imbalances and abnormal energy balance such as diabetes mellitus (DM), chronic kidney disease (CKD) like thyroid diseases. One of these new discovered molecules called myokin is irisin. Althougt in humans the role of irisin have not sufficient study, not to be known the its clear function and some studies have conflicting results, irisin is induced by exercise and may better reflect the metabolic status in patients suffering from metabolic disorders and may be a therapeutic agent for to prevent and treat for metabolic diseases such as DM, obesity, chronic renal failure. There is only one and first ever performed evalution of the relationship between the thyroid hormones which have important effects on metabolism with serum irisin levels. In this study, serum irisin level was lower in hypothyroid patients than the hyperthyroid patients at the border of statistical significance. However there is no study about the level of irisin with before and after the treatment of thyroid diseases. Therefore, we aimed to compare the serum irisin levels at the time of diagnosis in patients with thyroid dysfunction and the serum irisin levels when they provided euthyroid situation after the necessary treatment. For our study, serum irisin levels at the time of diagnosis and after the treament when they were euthyroid of the studied group consisted of 55 patients with newly diagnosed and appropriate to start treatment which including 15 subclinical hypothyroidism, 13 clinical hypothyroidism, 10 subclinical hyperthyroidism, 17 clinical hyperthyroidism and healty control group including 17 individual's serum irisin levels were determined by ELISA. There is no statistically significant difference between the serum irisin levels in the patients groups of subclinical hypothyroidism, clinical hypothyroidism, subclinical hyperthyroidism, clinical hyperthyroidism at the time of the diagnosis and when they were euthyroid after the treatment (respectively p=0,570; p=0,221; p=0,074; p=0,332). Pre-treatment irisin levels of the patients and the control group's serum irisin levels compare there is no statistically significant difference (p=0,337). There had no significant difference between the levels of irisin in hypothyroidism (subclinical+clinical) and hyperthyroidism (subclinical+clinical) and the control group (p=0,266). In our study why there is no significant difference in the results are the study included limited and small number of patients and there may be varios individual, environmental and metabolic factors which effect the serum irisin levels.
