Abstract (EN)

The aim of this dissertation is to investigate urban space and gender related experiences and opinions of urban planners who are members of UCTEA Chamber of City Planners' (CCP) women commission. The research population of the study is composed of Women city planners that have had managerial positions since 2008, when the women studies got started within UCTEA in the context of women's professional experience, managerial experimentation in the Chamber of City Planners of those women and their identity as women so as to examine experiences and opinions on city and urban space. Field research is carried out through quantitative research and semi-structured interview forms. The theoretical research and literature review depend on analysis of printed and online publications. The first part of the study encompasses development of cities in the theoretical discussions, urban theory, urban planning and its criticism feminist geography studies and feminist methodology. In the second part, dissertations and printed publications that made in Turkey on urban space and gender are examined. Following, third part is composed of general information about UCTEA and CCP women studies and the findings and evaluation of field research. The results of the research reveal that i) how the studies in Turkey that tackle urban space and gender are developed, in which disciplines they came to the agenda and what the frequency of such studies within these disciplines is, ii) what kind of practices do the UCTEA and UCTEA CCP, which are democratic mass organizations, about women and gender problems and what the role of those practices in the struggle against gender related inequalities, iii) what the opinions and experiences of women members of UCTEA CCP who are participant of the field research of this dissertation about gender related spatial constraints in urban space are, what kind of a role can urban spatial arrangements play to reduce or to annihilate these constraints and how the participants are affected by those constraints for all that their education and status.
