Geology of Tımraş-Apasaraycık-May sinkholes and their surroundings

Abstract (EN)
The study area has a total surface area of 61 km2 located near the sinkholes of Timraş, Apasaraycık and May Dam within the boundaries of Çumra district, approximately 46 km south of Konya. Stratigraphically, the oldest unit in the region consists of Jurassic-Cretaceous aged Lorasdagi limestones belonging to the Gökçeyurt group. Lorasdağı limestones are composed of smoked, beige and white colored medium-thick bedded limestones. Development of the diagonal crack systems due to folds and fractures formed steep cliffs in the topography. Late Cretaceous Midostepe formation compatibly overlaps the Lorasdağı limestone. The Midostepe formation is characterized by khaki-light smoked colored flint limestones. The Hatip ophiolitic melange, which includes different Late Cretaceous limestone blocks, mudstone, sandstone, serpentinite, volcanic and metamorphosed rock fragments, has been overlapped by tectonic overthrust over these two units. These three units are overlapped by the Dilekçi group deposits in the Late Miocene-Early Pliocene time period. At the base of the Dilekçi group , the Sille formation lays , which consists of light smoked, light brown, medium-thick lenticular, cross and parallel bedded, medium-sized diffuse, semi-round-round pebbles, medium-well cemented conglomerates. The Sille formation overlies the older units with an angular unconformity. The Late Miocene-Early Pliocene Ulumuhsine formation overlies the Sille formation with a horizontal and vertical transition. Ulumuhsine formation is mainly characterized by beige, yellowish white, off-white colored limestone, oncolite, stramatolite, clayey limestone, marls. The mentioned rocks are covered with an angular unconformity from Pliocene to Quaternary by the reddish, gray colored sand and supported by silt particle , medium cemented, Topraklı formation. Over all units, Quaternary aged slope debris and alluviums are located of which it's precipitation continued till now
