The migration tendencies of rural youth in the Tokat province and the effects of migration on the agricultural sector

The aim of this study is to evaluate the migration tendencies of young people living in rural areas of Tokat/Turkey province, and the effects of migration on agricultural structure. For this purpose, the reasons that lead young people to migrate and motivation behind migration in the rural areas, the causes of unemployment, social and economic structure, livelihood and education problems among the families, and the effects of incentive and grant schemes applied in the region were addressed. In the study, a survey was conducted with 164 young individuals from 23 villages determined by the population density and agricultural production status in the central district of Tokat. The data obtained were evaluated by Chi-square analysis and presented in tables. In the study, it was determined that rural youth, 46.3% of them wanted to migrate from the village, 43.3% did not want, 10.4% were undecided about migration and 76.2% were not satisfied with agricultural income. According to the results of the study, all of the young people who want to migrate stated that they believe that they can find a job even though they have some concerns and doubts about the job in the place to be migrated. In the formation of opinions of young people about migration; matters such as age, educational status, presence of relatives in the place to migrate, the expectation that they will find support and support after migration from the countryside, the number of individuals in the household, marital status and income level proved to be effective.
