In the context of gender, working women's imagery in post 1980's Turkish cinema

In Turkey after 1980, an economic, political, social and cultural transition period occurred in parallel with the developments in the world. In line with this multi-transition and along with the impact of the second-wave feminist movement rising in the world in Turkey in those years, a transition was observed in gender roles. Manifestation of this new theme of women as result of the cinema's function to reflect the features of the society where she is part of makes itself evident in Turkish Cinema in the years after 1980. This study discusses the new women theme and the appearance thereof in Turkish Cinema came in sight after 1980 as result of the fact that women's participation to the productive labor market in Turkey was placed in focus. Consequently, while examining how women gender was made problematical by various feminist trends, participation thereof to productive labor market, household roles thereof, and the problems encountered in private and public domains pertaining to the gender are emphasized. It is observed that the women who joined the labour market after 1980 were mostly employed as unskilled labour in marginal or career-free jobs. The problems that women experience in the context of labour market and gender are reproduced in Turkish Cinema with the problematic narration of women in almost every period.
