Teacher expectations in the context of gender

Abstract (EN)

Gender stereotype, which is one of the factors affecting teacher expectations, has been researched in this study. In other words, the relationship between teacher expectations and gender stereotypes has been researched by using the qualitative research method. The 16 teachers, who have been currently working in some high schools located in Güzelbahçe and in Urla Districts of Izmir have consisted of the sample of the study. The results obtained in this study are as follows; '(i) gender of students affect teacher expectations on the students' academic and behavioral sense; (ii) even today's teachers, consciously or unconsciously, take part in the consolidation and transfer of gender inequality; (iii) teachers cannot play an effective role in elimination of gender inequality; (iv) teachers have some expectations that are fed with stereotypes for their students; (v) imposition of gender-based structure manifests itself in teacher expectations.'
