Ideological analysis of Pride March actions in news texts in Turkish press through the concept of gender

This study aims to examine the contributions of news texts to the reproduction of ideological discourses, considering how LGBT+ formations are portrayed in these texts. In recent years, LGBT+ individuals have become more visible both in Turkey and globally. Mass media and social media have significantly contributed to this increased visibility. LGBT+ individuals and organizations receive financial and moral support from transnational organizations, international corporations, and particularly Western states. This empowers them to advocate for their rights, elevating them from disadvantaged groups. This research investigates how the ideologies of groups with such material and political support are reproduced in media texts. Using Teun Adrian van Dijk's news discourse analysis model, this study analyzes news articles about "Pride Parades" on the websites of Birgün, Cumhuriyet, Yeni Şafak, and Sabah newspapers. It examines how these newspapers, representing two different ideological backgrounds and operating at a national level in Turkey, present "Pride Parade" events to their readers. In this context, the study seeks to reveal whether conservative and right-wing media reproduce the ideological discourses of the government, and whether left-wing media reproduce the ideological discourses of LGBT+ formations. The findings indicate that, in news articles about Pride Month parades, conservative and right-wing newspapers reproduce the government's ideological discourses, while left-wing newspapers reproduce the LGBT+ ideology.
