Gender and urban space: Hakkari example

The concepts of gender and gender inequality arise especially in positions and situations where women are disadvantaged. The roles attributed to women in the context of gender are among the factors that directly affect women's daily life and social status. The underlying reason why these roles are so effective in women's lives is the rights, obligations and responsibilities that come with these roles. Women face different situations and problems in urban life with the rights and obligations they have in the context of gender. In our research, it is aimed to examine the effect of the rights and obligations attributed to women in the context of gender on women's perception of physical and social arrangements in the city. In the study, using phenomenology, one of the qualitative research methods, and interpretive paradigm, semi-structured one-on-one interviews with 21 women were conducted to understand how women living in Hakkari experience urban life and its relations with physical arrangements. In the study, one-to-one interviews were conducted with the participants and a semi-structured interview form was used as a data collection tool. As a result of the study, women stated that men were given more rights in terms of social regulations such as customs, traditions and customs and the jobs they worked on, and that social and urban life was more male-oriented. Again, it has been concluded that the physical conditions and social arrangements of the city are inadequate, so women have difficulty in using the city and participating in public life.
