Perpection of psycholoical violence against women from a gender perpective: A study on Çankırı Karatekin University students

The society gives roles to men and women which are the basic elements, within the framework of their cultural, traditional and religious values, and the individual is expected to act in accordance with the roles. These roles are considered a way for the individual to be part of society and not having attitudes fitting these roles causes the individual to be excluded from society and also exposed to all kinds of violence by people around the individual. In this context, the subject of the study is the roles that society has assigned for men and women and the psychological violence that women are exposed to if they do not act in accordance with these roles. Thus, in the study, gender roles, violence and violence arising from gender roles have been touched on.Thanks to this study, it is aimed to examine the transformation of gender roles into psychological violence and to create and disseminate individual and social awareness by analyzing, under what circumstances and how often women encounter this violence and how they can fight it. Prevention of psychological violence, which is the feeder and precursor of other types of violence, constitutes an important step in preventing other types of violence. In the study, acts involving psychological violence, women who are exposed to psychological violence, ways of combating psychological violence and psychological violence caused by gender have been touched on.The qualitative research method is used in the study and in-depth interviews are conducted with twelve students studying at Cankiri Karatekin University. In the interview, the questions, that have been asked, shed light on respectively the psychological violence that women are exposed to, and the factors that feed the psychological violence. It is determined that women are exposed to a high rate of psychological violence in societies that adhere strictly to gender roles.
