Abstract (EN)
Architecture, as a discipline is always affected by the technological and social developments of the era. The Industrial Revolution, one of the most important events in the human history, has shaped the today's societies by affecting social life to a great extent both in terms of technological development and cultural accumulation. Traces of these effects are also seen in the field of architecture. Steel material that entered the construction sector with the Industrial Revolution, has been able to meet new spatial needs with advantages it brings to architecture, it also freed design. In this study, social change, architectural ideas and steel material interaction, which are constantly affect each other in historical process are discussed. In the first part of the study, the aim and scope were determined and resource researches were presented. In the second chapter, the concepts of society and social change are briefly explained and the effects of the Industrial Revolution in architecture are narrated. In the third chapter, the properties of the steel material and the processes it has gone through to be used in the construction sector are explained. In the fourth chapter, the effects of steel material on construction technique and architectural design approach and construction processes and architectural features of landmark buildings throughout the process that began with the Industrial Revolution are examined and their meanings have been interpreted. With the results and evaluations, the understanding of the process of steel material in the construction sector and its potential for future use are discussed at the end of the study.
