The effect of social media on social movements (Gezi Park example)

Social activities are of great importance in order to understand the sensitivities existing in society and to see the social realities. Some changes have occurred in the reasons of the emergence of social activities, in the forms of organization and in the modes of action, due to the change in society and technology by the time of progress. Especially the fact that people have always mobile devices which are connected to the Internet and that they can connect to the Internet when desired, reach more people in a short time, and that the Internet environment is difficult to control make the social media and the Internet new means in terms of the initiation and development of social activities and the communication of the activists in the activity. In this study, it is aimed to reveal the effects of the internet and social media on the emergence of the activity in social activities, the spread of the activity, the continuation period of the activity and the communication of those participating in social incidents. For this purpose, by examining Taksim Gezi Park Incidents, which have a great importance both locally and universally in the context of social incidents in our country, it will be tried to understand how the activists who participated in these actions benefited from the internet and social media means. In the first part of the study, the concept of Social Activity, the formation and development of social activities, the transition to new social activities and the development process will be discussed. In the second part, the concepts of internet and social media and the effects of social media on social incidents will be examined, in the third part, the effect of social media in Gezi Park Social Activity will be evaluated through a case study, and in the part of conclusion, the results of the research will be presented with the suggestions.
