Investigation of friction surfacing processes of powder-reinforced stainless steel materials

Various coatings are made in order to increase the wear and corrosion resistance of materials, to obtain a low friction coating layer and aesthetic appearance. Friction coating method is one o coatings made for this purpose. The friction coating method is a deposition process on the substrate material that moves under the shaft rotating around its own axis. In this study, three different friction coating processes were performed. First, the low carbon steel material was coated with AISI 304 stainless steel shaft as with friction and the effect of coating parameters on the coating structure was investigated. Secondly, stainless steel shafts were drilled from their axes and filled with TiC and B4C powders in certain proportions by mixing with stainless steel powders and then sintered by pressing. Then, using these sintered shafts, low carbon steel substrate material was coated with friction and the effect of coating parameters and powder ratios on the coating structure was investigated. Finally, in the coating process that made with powder laying method, TiC and B4C powders were mixed separately in different rations was laided on the surface of the substrate materialand the substrate material was covered with a stainless steel shaft. In order to examine the microstructure of all coatings, the optical microscope and SEM images were obtained and EDX and XRD analysis were performed. It has been observed that the coating structure improves with the correct selection of the shaft rotational speed, vertical and horizontal feed rate in friction coatings, and coatings deteriorated form in coatings made with sintered shafts with high powder addition.
