An econometric analysis on multidimensional poverty of women living in TR61 region

Today, there is a common view that monetary indicators alone are not sufficient to explain welfare, so researchers have turned to different approaches to measure poverty. The Multidimensional Poverty Index (MPI), which includes socio-economic and socio-cultural indicators in poverty measurement, has emerged as a significant alternative at this point. This index, which gives very healthy results reflecting welfare, has been preferred by many international institutions and researchers. The main purpose of this thesis is to measure the poverty of women in TR61 Region (Antalya, Burdur, and Isparta) by using Alkire-Foster Method rather than income-based approaches. For this purpose, the data required for the measurement was obtained from TURKSTAT 2017 Income and Living Conditions Survey. One of the main motivations of this study is that women's poverty has been handled mostly by monetary approaches so far. The most important feature of this study that distinguishes it from other studies in the literature is that it deals with women's poverty with an approach that includes social indicators and uses the multidimensional poverty measurement method known as Alkire and Foster (AF) method to calculate these dimensions. As a result of the calculations, it is seen that the multidimensional poverty rate of women in TR61 Region is 2.9%. In addition, it is possible to say that the main indicators of deprivation among women in this region are women with chronic illnesses and women living in houses with weak physical conditions. Moreover, another analysis was performed using OLS in order to reveal the factors affecting women's deprivation. As a consequence of the estimation of the model, it is seen that the dimension that has the most effect on the deprivation of the women in the region is the socio-cultural variables and this dimension is followed by the marital status and physical conditions of the household.
