Abstract (EN)

The increase in the number of drivers and vehicles increases the confusion in traffic. If the traffic is not limited with certain rules, it is dangerous for drivers, pedestrians and passengers. The increase in the vehicle traffic brought by the increase in the population every day in our country has increased the number of traffic accidents. In studies conducted in Turkey, it is detected that primary reason for traffic accidents is people, as about 98.2%. There are a number of features that all drivers must have. One of them is the knowledge of the traffic rules and the desire to obey them. Traffic signs are road guides that help drivers reach their destination safely. By combining the information they obtain from traffic signs with the skills they have to drive, the drivers respond effectively and accurately to existing hazards on the road. In order to measure the awareness of the meaning of traffic signs that are thought to have an impact on traffic accidents, a two-stage survey was conducted. The level of education, age, driver's license, etc. Together with 30 pieces (15 pieces Regulatory Signs, 10 pieces Danger Warning Sign, 3 pieces Informative Signs and 2 pieces Standing and Parking Signs) traffic signs were asked in a questionnaire to 496 participants with open ended and multiple choice. Some of the traffic signs have a high recognition rate even in the absence of a driver's license. Some plates are grouped as the most confused or otherwise known plates that are not known even to the participants with a driving license. In addition, the effect of personal characteristics (age, gender, educational level, etc.) of the participants on the awareness of traffic signs was investigated. As a result, it is thought that descriptive texts should be written under some plates. Recommendations have been made to increase awareness of traffic safety in the society to increase training and inspections.
