Comparison of macintosh laryngoscope against videos in adult patients requiring tracheal intubation

Objective: It is aimed to prospectively observe whether videosyngoscopy in general anesthesia facilitates intubation and reduces complications in adult patients scheduled for elective surgery compared to Macintosh laryngoscopy. Materials and Methods: Adult 200 patients undergoing general anesthesia; 100 were intubated with a video laryngoscope and 100 with a Macintosh laryngoscope. The laryngoscope with which the patients were intubated, their age, gender, ASA score, height, weight, body mass index, smoking and alcohol use status, additional disease, neck circumference, denture or missing teeth were recorded. In addition, the patients' El Ganzouri Risk Index score, consisting of the parameters of mouth opening, thyromental distance, Mallampati score, neck motion status, prognathic ability, body weight and history of difficult intubation, was calculated and recorded. Intubation times were recorded. After intubation, the number of attempts, whether there was a difficult intubation, Cormack-Lehane score, trauma and complications were evaluated. Results: The mean duration of intubation was found to be significantly lower in the group using the videoryngoscope compared to the group using the Macintosh laryngoscope. Although the number of patients with difficult intubation was higher, the Cormack-Lehane score we looked at to evaluate the appearance of the glottis was lower in the videoringoscope group than the Macintosh laryngoscope group. Complications related to intubation were seen less frequently in the group using the videoringoscope compared to the group using the Macintosh laryngoscope. Conclusion: We concluded that in patients who will undergo endotracheal intubation for general anesthesia, the videoyngoscope is superior to the Macintosh laryngoscope because it increases the glottic appearance, shortens intubation times and makes intubation easier.
