Effectiveness of triple-Pp positive parenting program on childhood attention deficit hyperactivity disorder: A case control study

Purpose: The aim of this study is to evaluate the effectiveness of Triple P Positive Parenting Programme on childhood attention deficit hyperactivity disorders (ADHD) symptoms, functionality, severity of disease, behavioral and emotional problems of children who are between 7 and 12 years-old and have ADHD with used medication at least 2 months. An additional aim is to evaluate potential effects of Triple-P on attitudes of their mothers and family functioning of children diagnosed with attention deficit hyperactivity disorders. Method:The study is a randomized controlled design. The sample of the study consisted of 60 children, aged between 7-12 years, diagnosed with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder confirmed by K-SADS-PL. Following randomization into two equal groups, parents of the cases participated in Group Triple P Positive Parenting Programme for eight weeks where as the control group did not. The two groups were compared right before and after the implementation on rates of sociodemographic, emotional and behavioral variables. Sociodemographic data form, Dupaul ADHD Rating Scale, Strengths and Difficulties Questionnaire (SDQ), Children's Global Assessment Scale (CGAS) and Clinical Global Impression-Severity (CGI) are assessed by clinician. Data were collected by using Parenteral Attitude Research Instrument (PARI), Family Assessment Device (FAD) that filled out by parents. The study data were evaluated with Mann Whitney U, Willcoxon signed rank test, chi-square analysis. Findings: The average age of the cases participating in the study was 10.25±1,39, 10 of participants were female (%20,8), 38 of participants were male (%79,2), the average age of cases' parents was 39,69±6,00, When we compared the results before and after the implementation of Triple P Positive Parenting programme in the case group, it was found that statiscally significant increase in CGAS scores, statiscally significant decrease in CGI scores. statiscally significant decrease in peer relation, emotional, behavioral, hyperactiviy problem subscale scores of SDQ, statiscally significant decrease in attention deficit and hyperactivity subscale scores and total score of Du Paul Questionnare, statiscally significant decrease in problem solving, communication, roles in family, affective sensivity, behaviour controlling, generel functioning subscale scores in FAD, statiscally significant decrease over parenting attitude, hostility and rejecting attitude, authoritarian attitude subscale scores and statiscally significant increase in democratic attitude subscale score of PARI Conclusions: Becoming Triple P Positive Parenting Programme prevalant in our country and researching the effects of Triple P Positive Parenting Programme on ADHD in the countries, where Triple P Positive Parenting Programme has already been implemented, are needed. Due to the results of our study we consider that Triple P Positive Parenting Programme can be useful in the treatment of children diagnosed with ADHD but further more studies about Triple P on children diagnosed with ADHD are needed.
