Abstract (EN)

Brick is one of the oldest architectural uses of clay. More than ten thousand years clay has been shaped to form a permanent shelter for humans. Produced in different sizes and shapes with increasing skill and experience, it has been used in complex structures to create arches and passages. Bricks, which are used in walls and floors, have begun to assume an aesthetic role with its decorative use, out of bearing and covering function. In this point we have an important place in the formation of a rich architectural tradition which we can see important examples from the artistic point of view. In addition to this feature, the brick material used as a functional building element in the architecture has been frequently used as an art material preferred by the artisans with the increasing interest in public art. Offering a wide range of work opportunities, this material offers endless application areas by making use of machine power in cooperation with brick factories. It is possible to work with plastic clay in the production phase and to produce sculptures with brick. In the first part of this study, brick material, historical development process, usage areas in architecture, primitive and modern forms of production are examined. In the second chapter, information about the nature of the material, structural rationalism and form-anti form concepts were examined and tried to be followed through the process of transforming a functional building material into the art object. Besides, examples from artists and architects who have been working with brick materials are presented. In the last part, brick forms were produced in the direction of these investigations and an exhibition work was prepared.
