Abstract (EN)

This research examines the mediator role of self-efficacy and self-monitoring on the relationship between burnout and self-handicapping. In addition to mediation analyzes since self-handicapping and self-monitoring concepts rarely studied in Turkey, they were examined with demographic variables.161 female and 203 male white-collar workers in service industry constitute the sample of the research. Convenience sampling method was used to reach the participants. Demographic information form, Short Version of Self Handicapping Scale, Maslach Burnout Inventory, General Self Efficacy Scale, Revised Self-Monitoring Scale were used in the data collection process. Appropriate series of analysis were executed for data analysis. According to analyzes mediator role of general self-efficacy and self-monitoring was found between reduced personal accomplishment subscale of burnout and self-handicapping. When reduced personal accomplishment scores increase, general self-efficacy decreases thus self-handicapping increases. Also reduced personal accomplishment scores decrease, self-monitoring scores increase thus self-handicapping scores increase. Higher scores of self-efficacy and self-monitoring negatively correlate with self-handicapping scores. Thus, general self-efficacy and self-monitoring were found as mediators between burnout and self-handicapping. Also, sector differences were found in self-handicapping, reduced personal accomplishment and depersonalization. Joint effect of gender and marital status was observed in self-monitoring. Emotional burnout, sector, general self-efficacy, and self-monitoring were among the predictors of self-handicapping, respectively. This research can be considered unique as it examines the mediator role of self-efficacy and self-monitoring on the relationship between burnout and self-handicapping. Also, short version of self-handicapping scale is adapted to Turkish. The findings are discussed based on the literature and suggestions for the future research are presented. KEYWORDS: Burnout, Self-handicapping, General self-efficacy, Self-monitoring
