The analysis of burnout syndrome in terms of job burnout and occupational burnout: An application on teachers

This study aims to determine the levels of job burnout and professional burnout of teachers and to identify the differentiation of their burnout levels with regards to some variables. Gazi Burnout Scale, which was developed by KOÇ, ARSLAN and TOPALOĞLU (2009), has been used within the scope of this research. The scale consists of two parts. In the first part, professional burnout level is defined with14 statements and in the second part job burnout level is defined with 12 statements. The survey prepared with Gazi Burnout Scale, has been applied on 426 teachers working in primary and secondary schools in Samsun. Measures of central tendency (frequency and percentage distribution) and statistical analysis methods (correlation, regression, t-tests and ANOVA) have been used in order to analyse the data obtained from the survey. This study searches for the differentiation levels of teachers? job burnout and professional burnout. In addition, the differentiation in burnout levels has been measured with regards to different demographic parameters. The results of the study indicate that there is a meaningful differentiation between the job burnout levels of teachers and their professional burnout levels. Besides, an increase in the professional burnout levels has also been observed according to the results. Especially, this differentiation level is high regarding the school where teachers work. In addition, when the burnout differentiation is tested in terms of seniority factor, the strongest relationship is observed in the case of teachers who have 11-15 years of senior degree with r=574 and it has been observed that this differentiation also decreases as the years of seniority decrease.
