Clinical and microbiological effects of probiotics usage after full mouth disinfection in the treatment of chronic periodontitis

Abstract (EN)

The purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of orally administered tablets containing Streptococcus oralis KJ3, Streptococcus uberis KJ2 ve Streptococcus rattus JH145 after full mouth disinfection on periodontal health of patients with cronic periodontitis. 48 systemically healty patients with cronic periodontitis were included the study. The patients were divided randomly into two groups. All patients' treatment was started after recording initial clinical measurements (pocket depth, attachment loss, gingival recession, plaque index, gingival index, bleeding on probing) and collecting microbial samples (subgingival, supragingival, saliva, tongue). Initial periodontal treatment was performed according to full mouth disinfection protocol. Patients were divided as control group (24 patients - FMD+Plasebo tablets for 12 weeks/3 tablets per day) and test group (24 patients – FMD+Probiotic tablets for 12 weeks/3 tablets per day). The clinical measurements recording and microbial sample collecting were repeated at 4th, 8th, 12th, 24th week. At the end of the 24 weeks, the clinical and the microbial data were statistically analyzed. The results of this study showed that treatment groups provided statistically significant improvement on periodontal health while there were no differances between groups.
